The deadline for reservations to attend this year's NALF reunion in lovely Natural Bridge, VA from July 20-22 is fast approaching. Be sure to call and reserve your room by June 29 so that you will be eligible for the group rate.

Please call Natural Bridge Hotel at 800-533-1410 and mention National Association of Lively Families to receive the group rate of $77.70 per four-person room, which includes taxes. This rate is also available two days before and after the reunion, if rooms are available. If you have not made reservations, please call soon!

This year's host, Frank Lively, says the many nearby attractions make Natural Bridge an ideal location for the entire family. There are many historical sites within close radius. These include Civil War sites, Native American sites,

natural history locales. The natural attractions include caverns, trails, and easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway. For younger tastes there are a variety of museums and oddities, with discounts available for those attractions which charge a fee for admission. The hotel also has three options for dining: the period-decorated Colonial Dining Room, the more casual Summerhouse Café, and the Red Fox Lounge.

The nearby cities of Roanoke and Lexington offer more opportunities to explore history and seek food and fun. About 40 miles to the southeast, Roanoke is a bustling city with a variety of restaurants and historical and entertainment facilities, from the historic down-town Roanoke Farmers' Market to the Science Museum of Western Virginia.

Fifteen miles to the north of Natural Bridge is the quaint town of

Lexington, home to several Civil War figures and two nationally-renowned universities. Scattered between these two towns are a variety of interesting sites, including the Enchanted Castle Studios, billed as "the Universal Studios of Appalachia," and the Virginia Safari Park, a drive-through zoo.
The 2007 reunion is shaping up to be a fun- filled, relaxing event the entire family can enjoy. Don't hesitate to make your reservations.

LIVIN' LIVELY
Lively Family History
I am the son of Emily Martin Lively, the grandson of Alexander "Guy" Lively and Nell (McCrary) Lively, and the great grandson of Matthew Lively and Sally (Cates) Lively. The Livelys I descend from lived and are buried near Sardis in Burke County Georgia.
I first went to college in New England, dropped out, and joined the Air Force (USAF Security Service). Later I went back to school and did graduate work at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!). I founded the anthropology/ archaeology program at the University of South Alabama in 1970 and retired after teaching and doing research for 32 years. My major areas of interest are the prehistory and early history of the southeastern United States, Mexico and Meso America.
I was first introduced to archaeology on Briar Creek in southeast
Georgia by my Uncle Matthew (Mack) Lively who made a number of contributions to southeastern archaeology. He also pulled some funny stunts with the citrons we picked up in the fields of Burke and Screven County.
My wife Becky is academically trained in both archaeology and biology. She is Director of Steward-ship for the Mississippi Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. My two living sons are Noel Stowe, a policeman on Dauphin Island, Alabama and Matthew Stowe (named after a long line of Matthew Livelys) who does environmental studies in southwest Alabama.
We have a number of hobbies including amateur radio: Read /W4HOZ, Becky /KD5RHB and Noel/KE4IOV (htpp://www. qsl.net/w4hoz). Also, we live in the country in southeastern Mississippi and have
7 rescue dogs, a cat, and 2 horses. Becky enjoys equestrian activities and traveling. We also travel to Mexico and the western US we take a group of students annually to the Yucatan.
We have a number of late 19th and early 20th photographs of Livelys. We would be happy to provide a list and share as time permits.
Perhaps one of the things we enjoy most is visiting my sister Emily Carr and brother John Clow in New England when it turns 95 degrees here in south Mississippi.

Retirement Beckons:
Several cousins have written in to exclaim the wonderful benefits of retirement. John Clow, of Rehoboth, MA, retired after 30 years with Verizon. He began his career with Coke, for whom he worked five years. John is the son of Emily Lively Clow and has been married to wife Judy ("a wonderful lady from Barrington, RI") for the past 35 years. Judy is a retired teacher (34 years), and John says he's begun working on his big "honey-do" list, saving a bit of time for fishing, gardening, and enjoying their cats.
John's sister, Emily Carr also writes of retirement from her home in Saunderstown, RI. A retired K-1 teacher, she is married to Bob Carr. Emily says, "Things that are important to me are our 3 grandchildren, my gardens, all sorts of nature stuff, sailing my Sunfish, reading, knitting, traveling, etc etc---a passion that I have is working in Haiti just trying to figure out ways to help people become independent and empowered with the HOPE that they won't give up HOPE !!! Of course I enjoy being with my two brothers and their wives---Judy and John Clow (Rehoboth MA) and Becky and Read Stowe (Lucedale MS)."

A bit further south, Rick Smith (husband to Audrey Weis Smith - daughter of Edward and Sevena Lively Weis) has retired from his position as Postmaster in Williston, SC. Rick worked over 40 years with the Postal Service and is now excited about his prospects as a "free man." "Every day is Saturday," he says. He has since opened an antique booth in Augusta, GA and enjoys scouting estate sales and yard sales for "treasures." He has even gotten the family involved as Audrey and children Juliana, Patrick, and Alexandra have enjoyed shopping excursions with him.

Youngsters Graduate:
While some cousins are enjoying retirement, several others are just joining the work force as they donned graduation robes and proudly marched forward to receive diplomas. Steven O'Pry of Waynesboro, GA graduated from Burke County Comprehensive High School on April 20. He is the son of Steve and Carol O'Pry, of Waynesboro. David Weis, Steven's cousin, graduated from East Dubuque High School in East Dubuque, IA on June 1. David is the son of Phillip and Sheila Weis of East Dubuque. Both boys are the grandsons of Edward and Sevena (Lively) Weis of Waynesboro, GA.

Congratulations to these recent retirees and graduates! Please send in news of what's happening in YOUR Lively household.
