1999
NALF REUNION
PARTRIDGE INN
AUGUSTA, GEORGIA

Hats off to the Georgia Lively's who hosted the 1999 reunion and, in particular, to Ann, Kate, Deena and brother Hugh for pulling it all together.

The lunch at the (Burke County) Lively pond was very nice with southern pit-cooked BBQ, hash, rice, and a world of side dishes and desserts. A host of Burke County cousins outdid themselves providing the meal.

After the lunch and a bit of visiting, most of the group retired to the swimming hole. Some went in the water involuntarily, like Carolyn and Liz Lively, and others went in voluntarily to prevent being thrown in. The water temperature was about 64 degrees Fahrenheit and would cool you off quickly. Many also participated in a game of water volleyball.

About 3:00 p.m. the group began to drift off to get ready for the 8:00 p.m. Lively entertainment and family auction. Clogging and line dancing was performed to the pleasure of all. Stories by Katy Waldrop, singing by Russell and Tonya Lively and our southern favorite "Dixie" performed by Bob Hammond, curator of the Burke County Museum in Waynesboro, Georgia, were all part of the evenings entertainment. James and Julian Lively led the auction where money was raised for NALF.

Sunday morning, after a more than ample breakfast, various reports were presented and closing song and prayer were made. Our family drifted off to their private destinations with some sadness in parting. If you missed this reunion, we missed you. Let's all meet at Lynchburg, Virginia in 2000. Make plans now!

CRISIS IN KOSOVO

Steven Lively moves slowly and carefully with a live mine in his hands U.S. Army Lt. Steven Lively slowly backs away after gingerly placing a live mine on the ground.
A CLOSE CALL
U.S. Army Lt. Steven Lively, pictured, clutches a sack containing a mine in the Kosovo town of Kacanik. A refugee boy, on returning to Kosovo, found it in his home and gave the explosive to Lively. The lieutenant sets down the sack and flees after it is determined that the mine cannot be defused. Then Lively composes himself. "I thought we were going to blow all those kids - and myself - to hell," he said. The soldiers roped off the mine and moved on.
