Natural Bridge, VA will be the site for the 2007 NALF reunion. Touted as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, Natural Bridge has had an illustrious history. It was once owned by Thomas Jefferson, who purchased 157 acres of land from King George III for 20 shillings, with Natural Bridge part of that purchase. Even earlier, in 1750, George Washington carved his initials into the stone while surveying the area for Lord Fairfax. Besides the wonder of the bridge itself, the area features other exciting sites, such as Monacan Village, a living history 18th century Indian village that dramatizes life in a typical Monacan Indian village 300 years ago. There is also the Drama of Creation, a sound and light show that presents the creation of the bridge in a dramatic, moving conglomeration of music and light. The bridge was first illuminated by order of President Calvin Coolidge, and now modern audiences can watch the mountains come alive in this marvelous show. Nature lovers will also enjoy the Cedar Creek Nature Trail, which winds a mile through the mountainous region and includes the 1500 year old Arbor Vitae Tree. Look for further information in upcoming newsletters as plans for next year's reunion are finalized.

Alta's 6 children and 17 grandchildren gathered from CA to MA to celebrate with songs, skits, videos, and a clever "Granopoly" game created in her honor. It incorporated places and genie pieces of her life! Alta and Harold Marsh hosted two of the Reunions of the National

Association of Lively Families in Nashville, TN. One was at the Sheraton Hotel, Downtown, and the other one, about 1989, at the Ramada Inn South where son, Sam Lively Marsh, was Manager and Co-Host. Harold was Vice President of NALF for several years. Alta served as Genealogist, Compiler and Editor of the SECOND SUPPLEMENT TO LIVELYS OF AMERICA, 1982, pub. in 1986.

Celebrates 90th!

in Davenport, Iowa. Richard has four children, seven grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
77th Annual Lively League Reunion
On a sunny, hot Tuesday, July 4th , 2006, 259 descendants of George Pierce Lively and their guests enjoyed a Southern pit-cooked barbecue at Lively Pond in Shellbluff, Georgia. The festivities opened with Alex Lively calling all to the pavilion with the traditional blowing of the Conch Shell. Julian Lively called the gathering to order and Merv Waldrop led the group in pledging to the US and Georgia flags. The opening song, 'My Country 'Tis of Thee,' was led by Jane Lively, followed by a scripture reading and blessing of the meal by Dennis Dickey. Then the crowded headed for the lines forming around the delectably-laden tables and enjoyed food and fellowship. The meal was followed by the annual meeting conducted by Lively League officers. Among new items of business was the dedication of the new playground, a venue welcomed by the many youngsters who enjoyed sliding, swinging, and sand-castle building.

Things are Popping Up 'Lively' All Over
Tim Lively, NALF member from Shellbluff (Burke County) GA has been on a mission to uncover instances of the 'Lively' name cropping up in out-of-the-way places. On a recent trip to New York, Tim came across the grave of G. J. Lively at the Elmira Prison Camp in Elmira, NY. In his research, Tim discovered that Lively was a member of the CSA and belonged to Company K of Holcombe's South Carolina Legion. The cemetery in Elmira is adjacent to Woodlawn Cemetery, the location of Mark Twain's final resting place.

Tim also came across a street in Augusta, GA named 'Lively Street,' but was unable to find out for whom the street is named. In Burke County, there is also Claxton-Lively Road, named for the families who live along this rural stretch. This is also the road which leads to access to the Lively Pond, site of the traditional Lively League reunions.

An Internet search for the word 'Lively' also uncovers some interesting information. In Tallahassee, FL, there is a Lively Technical Center, founded by Lewis M. Lively in 1937. The school opened with 52 students and only two instructors, and now serves over 4500 students, with a faculty and staff of 150.

There is even a province in Ontario, Canada named after a 'Lively.' Lively, Ontario is a community near the Creighton nickel mines that was established in 1950 for workers at the mines by Charles Lively, a nickel company employee. The community is located in the city of Sudbury and is becoming a popular tourist destination. It is also home to the Anderson Farm Museum.
Have you uncovered the Lively name in an unusual or interesting place? Do you know of an interesting tidbit in Lively history? Your news and photographs are welcome! Please send items to the editor for inclusion in upcoming editions of the newsletter.

Whew! WE did it – another newsletter completed! I must thank several folks who have been gracious in supplying news and photos for this edition of the newsletter. Thank you, Tim Lively, for the 'Lively' photos and history you gave me. I hope you'll keep them coming! Thanks, also, to my mother, Sevena Weis, for news of births, marriages, and deaths from the Burke County Lively Line over the past year. (Thanks, Mom!) Also, thank you, Jean Oman, for the article concerning your mother's homegoing, and Christy Marsh Haines for the article and photo of your mother's surprise birthday party. Also, thank you Gloria Eberhart and Russell Lively for information about the
2006 NALF reunion in Marietta. All of you have been tremendously helpful in generating this edition of the newsletter!
I suppose I should have introduced myself two newsletters ago, but, while I have the space and time, I'd like to tell you about myself. I'm the daughter of Edward and Sevena (Lively) Weis from Shellbluff (Burke County), GA, the 7th of their 9 kids. I teach 12th grade English at Burke County High School and like to write in my spare time. (I've written three novels and 14 short stories.) My husband Rick and I have three children: Juliana, 18, a freshman studying Psychology at College of Charleston in Charleston, SC, Patrick, 16, an aspiring professional
soccer player, and Alexandra, 13, our baby.
As editor of Livin' Lively, I hope to disseminate timely information and news that helps Lively families across the country (and the world, for that matter) learn more about each other.
My sister Jane (Weis) Lewis and my cousin Sherry (Lively) Brinson are co-editors of this newsletter and have been very helpful in proofreading and gathering information. Please send us information through e-mail at the addresses on the left or through USPS at my home address. I welcome any comments and/or suggestions and hope you will send us news of what's going on in YOUR Lively family.
