2005 NALF Reunion in New Orleans
Plan NOW for the 2006 NALF
  • Coming in July to Marietta, GA
  • Our 70th year of NALF fun and history
  • See the article below and on page 6 for more information
On July 22, 2005, resident cousin Charles Pruitte welcomed 101 registered members to New Orleans for the 69th annual NALF reunion held July 22-24. The gathering was organized by Mervin Waldrop, of Waynesboro, GA. The oldest person in attendance was 88-year-old Ross Bolton, while Vivian Page, 15 months old, was the youngest. Don Lively, with children Abby and Zach, traversed 1300 miles from his home in Colorado and traveled the farthest to attend.
During the three-day event, family members enjoyed touring the French Quarter and the historic district, both of which have since been devastated by Hurricane Katrina. On Friday night, president John Lively called the business meeting to attention and reports were heard from the genealogist, the
treasurer, and the historian. Members enjoyed the traditional family entertainment and auction on Saturday night. Sunday morning, guests gathered for a breakfast meeting, where they were invited to both Orlando, Florida and Marietta, Georgia for next year?s reunion. The votes were cast in favor of Marietta.
Be sure to read details of next year?s reunion below and on page 6.

Young and old alike will thrill at the attractions of Six Flags Theme Park located minutes away. There are also quaint shops and bustling mall
within close proximity.

Auction a Big Success!
The New Orleans reunion saw the successful return of the traditional Lively Family Auction. Brothers Doug and Mike Lively took the helm as auctioneers, replacing ?retired? dad Julian Lively. Doug ?warmed up? the audience with a little massage activity and entertained the crowd with his own rendition of the famed ?Alice the dog? routine passed down for years as part of Julian?s repertoire. Then it was down to business.
Among items up for bid were a 1940?s war bond poster, a cane made by Don Lively from wood salvaged from the Lively homestead in Burke County, and beautiful homemade handicrafts lovingly created by various Lively family members.
All-told, the auction raised $1756.00. As one of the few fund-raising activities conducted on a yearly basis, the auction depends upon family members to submit items for bidding. Now?s the time to begin work crafting items or scouting attics and garages for family memorabilia for next year?s auction. Please make plans to join this family tradition next year in Marietta.

Many New Orleans Attractions Lost to Katrina
Many family members were shocked to learn of the devastation wreaked upon New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina only weeks after the festivities of the NALF reunion. To many, it is unfathomable that the lovely historic district and unique Louisiana-style entertainment icons have been so horribly ravaged by the storm?s wrath.
The traditional group picture was taken on Canal Street in front of the Astor Hotel, both of which suffered extreme damage during the Hurricane. Also, many family members enjoyed
traversing the city streets on the historic New Orleans streetcars. Neither the streetcars nor the streets themselves are operable today.
It was with poignancy and sadness that many reunion attendees pored over their New Orleans photographs. If you have some striking photos from the area that you?d like to share, please send negatives or copies to the editors. Members of the editorial staff would like to compile a New Orleans album to commemorate the devastated area.

Lively Family History
On July 4, 2005, the Lively League met for their 75th annual family reunion. A record crowd of approximately 254 Livelys (including 30 guests) gathered at Lively Pond in Shellbluff, GA under the recently expanded pavilion for food, fun, and memories. While kids frolicked in the pond after the meal, the adults conducted their annual meeting. Throughout the course of the afternoon, many reflected on how blessed we are to enjoy this family tradition for all these years. This tradition was one that began through the efforts of several brothers and their families one steamy July afternoon 75 years ago.
On July 4, 1930, the descendants of George Pierce Lively and their families met at the home of James Thaxter Lively near Waynesboro, GA. About 50 family members enjoyed an old-fashioned barbecue served on a long table built beneath the oaks. After the meal, family members traveled by
auto to Botsford Baptist church, where they gathered around the church steps for the recitation of poems and family stories. The day was such an enjoyable event that the elders met to officially declare the event an annual occurrence. Green P. Lively made the official motion, which was unanimously carried, and James Thaxter was elected president. It was also decided that the event would be held every July 4th at "The Old Home Place," now affectionately known as Lively Pond. This gathering of Livelys has also officially become known as The Lively League.
Throughout the years, many traditions have been passed down as the Lively families met each Independence Day. A barbecue pit was installed at the pond and several young men manned the pit throughout the wee hours each July 3rd. Van Zandt Lively, son of James Thaxter and Julia Smith Lively, became
known as the maker of the hash, while his older brother, Quartus Urbane (Q.U.) was the one who concocted the sauce. These duties have since been passed on, with Van, Jr. now in charge of the hash and Scott and Shannon Norton taking on duties of sauce-making. Ashton Lively originally manned the lemonade stand, a task now deftly undertaken by Mike and Susan Lively and their families. Julian Lively is the official "conch-shell-caller," announcing the official beginning of each reunion with a long blast on a conch shell, a tradition also passed down by his father, Ashton.
It is remarkable in this day of globalization and fast-paced living that a family tradition of such magnitude is still honored and celebrated. Family is the mainstay of the National Association and equally vital to Livelys everywhere. Please share with us the history of your local Lively traditions for future issues.

George F Lively Line Misc. Lively Lines – Section N, Page 1058
Genealogy research by Mrs. Bernice O. Lively Awtrey provided the data included in the Supplement to Livelys of America 1972, pages 1058 – 1064. This new line was given the name of George F. Lively and designated as Section N in the Misc. Lively Lines Chapter 14. In the Second Supplement to Livelys of America 1982, this line was inadvertently left out and Section N was assigned to the Aaron Lively Line (page 1735). Over the years Mr. Dwight George Allen has done considerable research on his family line, which just happened to include a George F. Lively. Dwight has documented two generations of ancestors for George F. Lively; George F. was the oldest son of Samuel Lively (possibly Jr. – b. abt 1812) and Nancy Kent (b. abt1809) of Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Samuel was the son of Samuel Lively (possibly Sr. – b. before 1781 in GA?) and Rhoda (?) Lively (b. abt 1785 in GA?)
If you have any data on this line, please contact Bob Lively at the address or phone number above.

Over the years, Mr. Dwight George Allen has documented two generations of ancestors for George F. Lively.
